Glossary — Key terms used in SETImap
GLOSSARY
Key terms
Definitions of the scientific and technical terms used throughout SETImap.
- Observation
- A recorded measurement from an instrument at a specific time, frequency, and sky position. The fundamental unit of the atlas.
- Event
- A time-bounded observation or detection — a burst, transient, or other time-limited phenomenon.
- Anomaly
- An observation or pattern that is statistically unusual relative to a well-characterized background model. An anomaly is a question, not an answer.
- Candidate
- An anomaly that has passed initial quality checks and interference rejection, and merits further investigation. Not a confirmed finding.
- Candidate technosignature
- A candidate whose properties are consistent with a possible artificial origin, but which has not been confirmed as such. Requires independent replication and expert review before any stronger claim.
- Interference
- A signal of terrestrial or instrumental origin that mimics or contaminates an astrophysical signal. RFI (radio frequency interference) is the most common form.
- Natural explanation
- A known astrophysical source class (pulsar, magnetar, AGN, stellar flare, etc.) that accounts for an observed anomaly.
- Unresolved
- A candidate for which no natural explanation fully accounts for the observations, but for which no artificial origin has been established.
- Independently replicated
- A detection confirmed by a separate instrument, team, or analysis pipeline that was not involved in the original detection.
- Messenger
- The physical carrier of information: electromagnetic radiation (radio, infrared, optical, UV, X-ray, gamma), gravitational waves, neutrinos, or cosmic rays/particles.
- Provenance
- The complete chain of custody for a data product: source archive, instrument, observation ID, calibration version, processing pipeline, and transformation history.
- Localization
- The sky region within which a source is constrained to lie, expressed as a position and uncertainty (e.g., RA/Dec ± arcseconds, or a probability skymap).
- Coverage
- The set of sky positions, times, frequencies, and sensitivities for which an instrument has made observations. Absence of a detection is not evidence of absence without a coverage estimate.
- EDZ (Entropy Drop Zone)
- A region or time window in the data where entropy is unexpectedly low — more ordered than the surrounding background. Part of the Entropica1 RSCS sequence.
- SGF (Symbolic Gradient Field)
- A map of the topology, direction, and transitions of symbolic patterns across a dataset. Part of the Entropica1 RSCS sequence.
- Ensemble-SINDy
- A method for inferring compact, interpretable candidate rules from data and testing whether they generalize. Part of the Entropica1 RSCS sequence.
- RSCS
- Reflexive Symbolic Cognition Sequence. The Entropica1 experimental analysis sequence: EDZ → SGF → Ensemble-SINDy, applied in fixed order.
- HiPS / MOC
- Hierarchical Progressive Survey / Multi-Order Coverage map. IVOA standards for multiresolution all-sky tiling and spatial indexing.
- IVOA
- International Virtual Observatory Alliance. The body that defines interoperability standards for astronomical data access (TAP, ObsCore, VOEvent, etc.).
