Data Policy — How SETImap handles data

DATA POLICY

How we handle data

Provenance, rights, licensing, and attribution principles for SETImap.

Federated access, not bulk copying

SETImap is designed as a federated discovery and analysis layer. By default, we query authoritative archives at their source rather than copying data into our own storage. Data is cached locally only where technically necessary for performance or reproducibility, and only where the applicable license permits.

Rights and attribution (planned standard)

When archive adapters are operational, each will be required to record the applicable license, citation requirement, embargo status, and rate limits. Attribution will be preserved through every transformation. This is a planned standard for the adapter framework, not a description of currently operating infrastructure.

No implied partnerships

The names of archives, observatories, and missions listed in the adapter registry are potential data sources identified from public information. Their inclusion does not imply a partnership, endorsement, data-sharing agreement, or permission to reproduce branding or restricted data.

Provenance in every record (planned standard)

When the atlas is operational, every candidate record is intended to include a provenance chain: source archive, instrument, observation ID, calibration version, processing pipeline version, and transformation history. This is a design goal for the platform. Current demonstration records are illustrative only and do not represent real detections or verified provenance chains.

Demonstration data

Records labeled "Demonstration only" are illustrative examples that do not represent real detections. They are clearly labeled throughout the platform and must not be cited as scientific findings.

User contributions (planned standard)

When a public contribution feature is launched, submitted observations, datasets, and literature records will be required to include full provenance, and will be reviewed before publication. Contributor terms specifying publication, attribution, licenses, and withdrawal rules will be presented and agreed to before any submission is accepted. SETImap does not claim ownership of contributed data. This feature is not yet open.
